BLACK SUBJECTS: Still II, 2014
Triptych: paint and charcoal on wood

The two pieces of artworks that left an impression on me were the Falling Man and BLACK SUBJECTS: Still II. Falling Man left an impression on me because it has a really deep meaning. It signifies what is happening in the African American community. This is basically showing how violence is used to solve problems. It also had an impact on me because I lost my cousin to gun violence. The second piece of artwork BLACK SUBJECTS: Still II, left an impression because just by looking at it, it gives the impression of imprisonment. The lines give the feel of being behind bars. My eyes were attracted to this specific artwork because of the different elements that are used throughout it.

Tembok Toleransi #2 (Tolerance Wall #2), 2013
Screen Print and paint on recycled cans, car audio system, and sound

The two artworks that I had a connection to were Zonk'ziwe, Green Market Square, Cape Town and Tembok Toleransi #2 (Tolerance Wall #2). I have a connection with Zonk'ziwe, Green Market Square, Cape Town because the facial expressions on the women's face draw my attention to the piece. It also allows me to feel the emotion of the women in the pictures. The description of the pieces said, "Just like our ancestors, we live 365 days a year, and we should speak without fear." I also feel a connection with the artwork because I can feel what the artist is going through just by looking at the picture. I also understand what it is like to be a black female. The second artwork Tembok Toleransi #2 (Tolerance Wall #2), I connect to this piece because on the wall there are a few recordings that relate to the different religions he went through. One of the recordings from his past religions were Christianity. This connects to me because I am a Christian.

Oil on Canvas

George Segal
Cinema, 1963
Plaster, illuminated Plexiglas, and metal

I would like to know more about these two pieces of artwork. I want to know why the artist used the color red to signify the is an act of violence and racism throughout his painting Multiplied. I would also like to know why he chose to use abstract expressionism. In the second artwork Cinema, I would like to know why he decided to create this piece. I also would like to know what this piece signified through his perspective.

Exploring Value and The Subtractive Color

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
Creating the value scale was a bit hard. The part that was hard about it was using the charcoal stick to try to shade the boxes. So, I decided to do a value scale with a pencil. The value scale with pencil came out much better than the charcoal. I feel that my value scale could have been a lot better than it came out to be. As for the color wheel, I struggled a bit on trying to make the black from the magenta, yellow, and phathlo blue. However, I feel like I did a great job. Besides the difficulties I faced, I enjoyed doing these two assignments.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
The media that I enjoyed working with best was the color wheel. I liked it the best because I got the chance to make the colors. I enjoyed seeing all the different colors you can make with just the three paints. With working with the charcoal and the pencil I found it to be a lot difficult because of the shading.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
The most important discovery would have to be making sure that you have precision. While creating art, you must have precision.  Also, making sure that the colors match up to what was in the book.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The most important information I learned from watching the value scale video is you how you should shade within the boxes and the pressure you put on the pencil. The next important information is how to draw the boxes. I feel as though this video was helpful as of what to do to create the value scale. The most important information I learned from the color wheel video is that primary colors are actually cyan, magenta, and yellow. I also learned how to place the colors. The video also showed how to mix the colors. This video was not as helpful as the other video was but it was still enjoyable to watch.

Project #1 Reflection

While completing this project I had faced a few challenges and successes. One of the challenges I faced was to find something to fit the description of the element or principle. I did not whether the pictures would be good enough.  However, one of the successes I faced was putting the photos on Photobucket and labeling them. This was actually one of the easiest parts of the project.

Colors vs Emotions

1. Describe Color and it's effect on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.
Colors and emotions have an effect on each other. This because different colors are coded for different emotions. For example, in the first video Color, the lightning has an effect on the colors which may have an effect on how the artist feels about the artwork. In the second video, Do You See What I see? The Science of Color Perception, stated that people emotion towards colors depend on the experience they had with that color. It also stated that it depends on the way different cultures or areas of the world perceives that color.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?
A theoretical aspect of color that most fascinates me is warm and cool colors. This fascinates me because we associate the colors based on what we see them as. For example, orange would be seen as a warm color because it associates with fire. The color blue would be associated with a cool color because of water or the sky.

3.  In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effect on emotions?
The biggest impact was that artist use certain colors in order to capture certain emotions. For example, Van Gogh tried to use this technique by using different colors red and green to portray terrible feelings within his piece. Another example was Mark Rothko, he used the color red to make people feel like they are trapped. It gave me an insight feel of what is going on within the artwork.

Video and CNN Article Review

1. For each video and article list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
From the first video, Aesthetics: Philosophy of the Arts, I learned that many philosophers came up with their own meaning of aesthetic art and it was ordered according to the establishment. The film also spoke about to this day that there are still philosophers out there coming up with new ideas of aesthetic art. In the second video, CARTA: Evolutionary Origins of Art and Aesthetics: Neurobiology, Neurology, and Art and Aesthetics, I learned that the way we view art comes from the brain. It also gave me information on how science can be related to art in a way. Also, they talked about a few rules of aesthetics. Everything that the two men discussed kept being traced back to the prefrontal cortex. Lastly, in the article, What the Brain draws from Art and Neuroscience, I learned about the different techniques. Also, how our brain is set up to understand lines, patterns, and colors.

2. Which philosopher's theory of aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosopher's name, era (time in history), and contribution to aesthetic theory in your response?
The 18th-century philosopher whose theory I thought was important was Alexander Baumgarten. Baumgarten believed that art belongs to the middle ground. This is where it is in between reason and sensitivity. This statement basically means that art gives the viewer the opportunity to figure out what is going on within that piece and have feelings towards it.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?
I feel that both Changeux and Ramachandran had really good reasonings to the scientific view of aesthetics and art. Changeux was talking about how artistic creation comes from our brains and the brains of our ancestors. Ramachandran spoke about the eight laws of aesthetics, and how you have to focus on that specific piece of artwork to understand the meaning of it. A few of those eight laws were Grouping or binding, symmetry, problem-solving, and principle of isolation. He also spoke about how art is exaggerated to make it pleasing to grasp the attention of the human brain. The thing I found interesting about Changeux lecture was how he believes that art is symbolism and is genetically encoded. What I found interesting about Ramachandran lecture is he gave an example of a bird that if it sees an object like a stick painted yellow with red stripes, it would think its the mother and beg for food.

4. How do the videos and article relate to the readings of the text?
The videos and article relate to the reading because it explains what is happening in the text and is giving peoples views and information that they found. The videos and article are also giving more information that is not found within the text. Also, the videos and article are straight to the point compared to reading the text.

5. What is your opinion of the films and article? How do they add depth to the understanding of the topic in your reading in the text?
I actually found the article and videos more interesting than the reading the text. Besides that, both the films and the article showed that art can be interpreted in many different ways. However, the videos and article went more in-depth to my understanding of the topic. They both spoke about the aesthetics, the different types of art that were created, and even gave a few examples.
