Module 10: Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
The first video I chose was African Art. I chose this because I want to know more about their type of artwork and how its made. The second video I chose was African Art: Legacy of Oppression. I chose this video because the title stood out to me.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the video African Art, I learned that they make their masks that they use for ceremonies, from wood and straws. I also learned that some of the masks can easily be deteriorated quickly so they have to be kept in a certain climate. The masks that are usually found in museums are either less than 200 years old. I also learned that their artwork is not supposed to be of a living person or animal but a spirit. In the second video, I learned that most of the masks were created to scare people. I also learned that this one specific mask was used to scare off their enemy which was the Europeans. However, it didn't work.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The Videos are related to the readings because they gave information about the artwork in Africa. However, the book explained more about how it was connected to Islamic art. Both the reading and the videos talked about the mask meanings and what it signified.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to the understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The videos were very informative. They allowed me to learn more about African artwork and what it signifies. Also, it gave me information on what influences African culture to create these different forms of artwork. The films added more information on what the reading did not touch on.
